1. Yak fiber properties

Micron Counts: Fine yak down typically ranges from 16 to 20 microns, directly overlapping with standard commercial cashmere (15 to 19 microns). For reference, baby cashmere sits at roughly 13.5 to 14.5 microns.
Warmth ”Yak is 30% warmer than merino wool”: Independent testing (often cited by apparel brands like United By Blue and specialty mills like Khunu) actually shows that yak down provides up to 40% more thermal insulation than merino wool of equivalent weight.
Elasticity & Structure: Knitters and textile scientists note that pure yak down lacks the natural elastic “crimp recovery” of sheep’s wool. Hence, rib knits have to be carefully engineered to prevent sagging.

Micron Counts: High-quality Bactrian camel undercoat (down) generally averages 16 to 20 microns (some highly refined sources quote 16–18, while broader commercial lots sit at 19–23). Stating 16 to 18 microns is only available for the top-tier camelhair-grade MK1.
Hollow Fibers & Thermal Regulation: Camel hair is medullated, meaning the fibers contain a hollow core (medulla) filled with air pockets. This structure provides extreme thermal insulation and excellent breathability without adding weight.

The hollow core (medulla) gives camel hair its lightweight insulation and fluid drape, but it actually reduces its overall tensile strength and elasticity compared to a solid, highly crimped fiber like merino wool. Academic data shows camel hair has an elongation at break of around 30-40%, but moderate elastic recovery. It is highly durable due to its robust cuticle and resistance to abrasion, but not because it is highly elastic.
Yak Density & Abrasion: Accurate. Yak down is inherently tough and holds up against abrasion significantly better than standard cashmere, making it a highly resilient everyday luxury option.
